Out With The Old. In With The New

Old MAET Goal: I hope to be able to more fluently use technology in teaching. I would like to become well versed in using google doc so I’m not reliant on saving my teaching materials, etc., on a hard drive. I would like to learn how to efficiently and effectively implement flipped learning in my subject areas. I also want to learn and apply the most up-to-date methods/programs for presenting material.

New MAET Goal: Learn how to use Google Classroom and incorporate Chromebooks, Google Drive, and creativity within the learning that occurs in my classroom. I would like to create a Weebly classroom website that has all of my unit notes (saved in Google Slides), educational videos, and supplementary links/documents. My overall goal is to make using Chromebooks and Google Drive fluid with learning in my classroom.

As far as what I have accomplished in terms of my past goals, I would say I am fairly proficient with Google Drive. I have put almost all of my Word and Powerpoint documents in Google Drive. I also have students use video editing programs that save via the cloud. I still would like to incorporate somewhat of a flipped classroom, but I have not made much progress with this. Currently I am more interested in applying Google Chromebooks for collaborative learning.

In reading my goal “I want to learn and apply the most up-to-date methods/programs for presenting material,” I’m not exactly sure what I mean by that. I will say I have learned a wealth of knowledge about different applications I can use for screencasting, creating presentations, images, websites, etc. Looking back, I cannot believe how much I have learned in the Masters of Educational Technology (MAET) program at MSU.

In my year 2 MAET cohort, I wrote a grant proposal (this was known as the Dream It Project) for getting Chromebooks in my classroom. I wanted to use chromebooks for collaborative learning, creative autonomy, and as an aid for flipping my classroom. I just discovered that next year I will part of a pilot program for using Chromebooks and Google Classroom in my classroom; I have been given a set of Chromebooks to use. I am extremely excited about this.

Currently I am at a point in my teaching where I want to put more of the learning in the student’s hands. By this I mean I want to have all my notes and supplementary material on my classroom website. I want my students to do research using their Chromebooks. I want them to collaborate using Google Drive. And I want them to create creative work that applies what they have learned using apps on the internet that save via the cloud (YouTube, PowToons, ToonDoo, etc.). I also want to learn about Google Classroom, which I am completely ignorant about.
