SoTL Scholarly Resources & Annotation

This week we were asked to pick five resources that would help us in our SoTL practice. SoTL is the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (Bender & Gray, 1999). Essentially SoTL discusses how educators study and collect data within their practice through learning from their students, other teachers, and from the success and failure of experimentation within their classroom; they are scholarly in their practice.  Below are five resources (annotation included) I will begin to use in my SoTL practice.

The first two resources were collected from the MSU library electronic resources database. When beginning my resource hunt, I called an MSU librarian and asked for advice on searching for scholarly information. I learned that there are various e-resources I can used based on what I am looking for. The librarian told me each resource has an “about” link that will tell me the subject areas it pulls from. He also mentioned if I want scholarly information, I can complete an advanced search which will give me the option to search for abstracts, scholarly journals, peer reviewed journals, etc. I found this very helpful in narrowing my research.

  • This study provides information on the benefits of flipping a classroom. This will be useful when I have to talk to my school principal about why flipping my science classroom will be beneficial to the students, etc.

  • This site provides information on “how to” flip a classroom. Again, this will help my professional practice.

  • This provides information on problem-based learning, which I want to implement in my professional practice.
